Career:

Williamson’s work explores questions of memory and identity creation. Williamson, who was trained as a printer, has worked in a number of mediums, including archive photography, video, mixed media installations, and made objects.

The names supplied by slave owners, ages, sexes, and places of birth, as well as the names of purchasers and sellers, prices paid, and the date of purchase of persons from the Indian slave trade, are written in black ink on cotton shirts in One Hundred and Nineteen Deeds of Sale (2018). The shirts are brought from India, soaked in murky waters extracted from the Cape Coast Castle, and strung throughout the grounds until September 24, 2019, Heritage Day.

They are then removed and brought to India, where they are cleaned and rehung as part of an exhibition at the Aspinwall House in Kochi. The Dutch East India Company brought these individuals to labor at the Cape Town Castle and the Company’s Gardens. One hundred and nineteen Sale Deeds Williamson combines slave trade history and memory in order to change a stigmatizing narrative into one that can confront and battle global inequities.

Williamson read excerpts from historical records while a lady picked out each shirt, read the information on it, and then carried it inside to be dipped in mud and put on a washing line. Slave trade history is brought to life via art. The artwork narrates a narrative of loss and represents the essence of a person flying in the wind with only their memories to guide them.

Williamson has created a variety of kinds of resistance art that analyze South Africa’s past. and in 2009 began her creative exploration of globalization with her continuing project, Other

Voices, Other Cities, which was featured in the Push the Limits. exhibition in Italy in February 2021. She is the founder of “Artthrob.co.za.”
